Iron and Steel corrode naturally in almost any environment. Arc and flame spraying of Zinc is used to protect iron and steel of almost any size and shape. Unlike painting zinc coatings have proven performances of a minimum of 19 years in the harshest of working environments. The galvanic electrochemical nature of zinc coatings causes them to sacrifice themselves in preference to iron and steel. AS per the AWS report 120 microns of zinc have coating has demonstrated life of more than 25 years in normal environments. The coatings have a tremendous advantage over paints and other organic barrier coatings which usually fail after a certain period of time through rusting underneath the film.

Zinc wires are also used in the capacitor technology and have extremely favorable results. Spraying on the capacitor ends with Zinc wires cause less damage to the capacitors, provides a better surface for attaching and gives more consistent results than a coating performed using any other non-ferrous wire.

The manufacturers of ductile iron pipe world-wide are now looking to give their customers a 50 year guaranteed life on their pipes.One of the main factors which will determine the life of ductile iron pipe is its ability to resist corrosion. To guard against risk of failure from exterior corrosion the manufacturers have introduced a metal sprayed zinc coating in immediate contact with the outside surface of the pipe. This is then being supplemented by bituminous paint and a polyethylene sleeving. Zinc coatings of up to 200g/m² are now being applied which are well within the Euro Norm, only asking for a minimum of 130g/m² of zinc.
